The wildlife centre of Les Planes de Son is a facility that has been incorporated into the countryside, which shelters different wildlife species of the Pyrenees. The species of animals there have had problems at birth and, consequently, their mother has not fed them, either because she has abandoned the offspring or because she has died. This is the point at which there is some human intervention, and by way of a process of in which their natural habitat is simulated, they can recover and establish themselves in circumstances similar to those as where they live in the wild.
The aims of the wildlife centre are based on three different aspects:
Knowledge and Awareness-Raising of the Species: bringing human beings closer to wildlife is a basic procedure, one to develop understanding of the importance of protection and preservation of the species and their different habitats.
Re-Introduction:in special cases, some of the species can be reproduced in the centre itself. In this case, humans do not play a part in the feeding process and the offspring will live with its mother during the months the mother must feed it. Once this period is complete, the animal can be released into its natural habitat. Due to this process, a species that was once lost can make a return to nature.
Research: in this third aim, the wildlife centre must serve as a resource for future zoology students to learn more about our species of animals.
At present, the non-knowledge of animal behaviour, of their habits and of their forms and structures (morphology) mean that there are still a lot of doubts in the scientific community on many species. |
